October 2025

Hello!

It was nice to see some of you at the Tutor Meeting yesterday. I was going to share a couple things there but here it is instead.

Besides the short story series we mentioned at the last meeting (Easy True Stories, Long Story Short, etc.) we also have From Home to School aimed at parents with school age children and Career Awareness Plus Series with titles like Hotel/Motel Jobs. These are short stories with exercises to learn vocabulary in these specific areas. You may find that even a chapter in one of these books could be useful for your student. From Home to School books are located in Bookcase 2 near the top and Career Awareness Plus are in Bookcase 3 near the bottom.

And an update to the July 2025 News from the Library–

The link below for Basic English Grammar 3d, Betty Schrampfer Azar, 2006 is now working.
Basic English Grammar 3d, Betty Schrampfer Azar, 2006

Here is link to the Basic English Grammar,4th edition that will let you view, print pages and/or download the entire book (576 pages).

The link for Essential Grammar in Use is still working.
Essential Grammar in Use, Raymond Murphy 4th ed. 2015
This link again will let you view, print pages and/or download the entire book (318 pages).

We have the print versions of both the Azar and Murphy books in the library. And my suggestions would be, if you find the links not working, search for the title in pdf format. Also since a site may disappear, if you want to be sure you can get to it again for longer use with your student download the book.

Happy Fall!

July 2025

Thanks to tutor Karen Pfanenstiel for sharing this information with Anne, who shared it with me, and I want to share it with you all. Karen found online access to a couple of Azar grammar books she’s been using with her student. One of them is:

Basic English Grammar 3d, Betty Schrampfer Azar, 2006

This link will let you view, print pages and/or download the entire book (554 pages).

I was inspired to see if I could find online access to a grammar book I enjoyed using with my student, Basic Grammar in Use, by Raymond Murphy. What I did find was the British version, (exactly the same except for a few spelling differences, e.g. colour for color).

Essential Grammar in Use, Raymond Murphy 4th ed. 2015

This link again will let you view, print pages and/or download the entire book (318 pages).

We have the print versions of both the Azar and Murphy books in the library.

We also have added a couple new books to tell you about, Learn English through Stories, Volume 1 and Volume 2. Each volume has 16 different stories offered in three different levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. The first volume are all Aesop’s Fables, while the second volume are other fables and their morals. These can be found in the Readers section of the library.

Please let me know if you like using these materials, or if you’d like to suggest other items you’ve found helpful in working with your students. Thanks!

January 2025

And the news is New Books!  We’ve just added a set called Long Stories Short in 4 levels–low beginning, high beginning, low intermediate and intermediate. These are by the same author as in our Novel Scenes series, Ann Gianola. In each book there are 15 lessons with a story and exercises for comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc.  Many of the stories have humorous (tongue-in-cheek) endings that add another dimension to reading comprehension. You can find these on the shelf with Novel Scenes, True Stories, etc.

Also a reminder–check our Online Resources for Tutors. There is a link to this on the For Tutors tab on the PiELL webpage. There are also print copies in the library. We hope you might find these sites helpful in working with your students. We will soon be looking to update this information so if you have suggestions please let me know.
