2010 Tutor Luncheon

Partners in English Language Learning recently held it’s 2010 Tutor Luncheon. The location was Margaritas Restaurant, whose owner, Trevor Michael (a former PiELL Board Member) donated a delicious lunch. Around 30 of PiELL’s Tutors came to enjoy the wonderful food and conversation. Judi Kreinick, our Board President, was unable to attend, so our Treasurer; Kathy Mollet acted as the facilitator for the afternoon.  She also told everyone about the great new fundraising program we’ve initiated, called SCRIP.

After the lunch, we had a special guest; Marlee Chamberlin’s student Gladys Hernandez (below). She shared some of her life experiences and some of the difficulties she’s had. She was well received, and was the hit of the party.  Tod Buis, a PiELL tutor and Student Evaluator, and new Board Member, gave a short presentation on the value of incorporating podcasts in your tutoring sessions. There is a link to his information on the "Learning Tips" page of our website "Podcasts". Thank you to all those who attended and those who helped make it a success. A special "thanks" goes out to Trevor Michael for his generosity.

2009 Holiday Party

Our first Board sponsored Holiday Party was held at the home of one of our Board Members on December 11, 2009 to give tribute and lift a glass to our wonderful tutors and other special helpers who keep our vital community outreach program purposeful and operative all year long.

September 2009--2nd Annual Tutor & Student Potluck

Everyone had a wonderful time at our Tutor/Student Potluck. The weather was great, and the location worked out beautifully. Thanks to one of our very generous volunteers for allowing us to use her property. It was a time for meeting new friends, relaxing, and enjoying tasty barbecue. It also turned out to be a great place for a new Tutor and Student match. See you at the next one!

July 2009--United UPS Distribution Center Breakfast

It was great to meet and greet the UPS distribution staff and drivers and have an opportunity to share our program with them. UPS employees generously support United Way. Yesterday they had the opportunity to meet 10 non-profits who were available to provide information and speak to the programs their funds support.

This joint effort between United Way and UPS is a yearly event and takes place at other UPS facilities within the greater Sacramento area (possibly nationally) and UPS provided all of us with a scrumptious breakfast of pancakes, sausages and juice….yummy!

Being my first year to attend this event, I had an opportunity to explore the programs that other non-profits offer to our community and see where we, PiELL, compliment other services within our community and what other services we can recommend to our client base.

The weather was most cooperative, cool with cloud cover for the morning event and a bit of rain appeared after we broke down the event.  Another great morning in Northern California.
