October 2010 Tutor Coffee

Discussion topics:

It is important for the organization to submit your hours spent at the end of every month. Include hours spent tutoring but also hours spent at a tutor coffee, talking with your resource tutor, etc. It is very easy now to just log onto the web site. Click on Tutor Report on the left hand side. Fill out the information, must include your resource tutors name. Click on "review report" at bottom. Next page, click "yes" to submit.

Turn in Progress Report twice a year. This is also on the web page.

Get to know your student.
The PiELL philosophy is to use student centered lesson plans. Be flexible. Sometimes we never get to the lesson plan because the student just wants to talk. And that is OK.

To add variety to your sessions there are many resources on the PiELL web site. Breaking news English.com – gives you a recent news article plus exercises. Other sites have bingo games, POD casts and lots of other activities. Google "ESL" for games.

The student level seems difficult to assess. We discussed that it is not all that important-just that a student continues to improve.

Nancy Jeffrey would like to find others who would like to get together so the students can practice their English together.

Nancy Guenther uses a Norman Rockwell book (with scenes from U.S. holidays) from the library with her student.

Todd is interested in the reasons students & teachers take breaks from regular lessons. Does the organization need student advocates during difficult situations? Could we provide a list of resource people?

Progress Report Usage/Lesson Planning Information:

  • Progress report due twice a year ~ different from monthly tutor hour report
  • Progress reports on 3 goals once a year (May) ~ Resource Tutor will remind Tutors
  • Section on monthly report available for progress reporting
  • Two purposes: grant writing and student progress
