LEARNING TIPS

July 2011 Tutor Coffee

Tutor Coffee notes by Nancy Creech

We had a very good turnout for our recent coffee at Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley. We are grateful to Peace Lutheran for this nice, quiet place for our meeting. Those in attendance were: Shari Coats, Cathy Fagan, Nancy Creech, Arthur Katz, Judi Kreinick, Nancy Jeffery, Myra Arstein, Bev Stout, Tod Buis and Louise Beesley.

We had a good discussion regarding our students and their progress and suggestions for new ideas for teaching. PASO A PASO was noted as an excellent book for teaching grammar. BANANAGRAMS was suggested as a fun game to teach vocabulary. Other games using letter tiles, such as Scrabble, would also work to invent vocabulary games with our learners. Two web sites recommended were: englishclub.com and a4esl.org.

John Jessup, a former President, tutor and supporter of PiELL, left a quantity of books, lesson plans and notes that are available for our use. Some are in the library and some were given to tutors attending the coffee.

Everyone is encouraged to use the SPD coupons when shopping there. For no trouble or expense to us, SPD will donate a percentage of purchases to PiELL when simply handed a coupon. We have a similar way to earn extra for PiELL when shopping at SaveMart, with a card you can carry in your wallet and use repeatedly. We are also encouraged to use the scrip program that earns money for PiELL (again, with no cost or trouble to us). When planning a large purchase, check with our treasurer, Kathy Mollet, to see if the company participates in the scrip program. Those large purchases can make a big difference to PiELL when scrip is used.

The main activity of the meeting was to get used to a new teaching tool we have available, several small and easy-to-use Digital Recorders. Tod Buis introduced them to us, handed out instructions and examples of ways to use them in a lesson, and gave us some hands-on time with the recorders. Check with Donna at the PiELL office to find out if there’s a recorder available to check out and use with your learner.
